Relief From the Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies

by | Apr 20, 2016

One of the side effects of the beautiful explosion of color known as Spring is itchy, red, watery eyes from seasonal allergies.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, seasonal allergies develop when the body becomes sensitized and overreacts to something in the environment. By their estimates, as many as 50 million people suffer from it.

In the spring it is hard to get away from the allergens causing the reactions, but there are some treatment options available in both prescription and over the counter.

Antihistamines reduce allergic reactions by blocking the attachment of histamine to cells in the body that produce an allergic response.

Decongestants shrink swollen nasal passages for easier breathing and reduce the size of blood vessels on the white (sclera) of the eye to relieve red eyes.

Mast cell stabilizers cause changes in mast cells that prevent them from releasing histamine and related mediators of allergic reactions. It does take several weeks for the full effects to work however so early intervention is the key to lessening the symptoms.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops may be prescribed to decrease swelling.

Steroids Corticosteroid eye drops are sometimes prescribed to provide relief from acute eye allergy symptoms for short-term use only.

Make an appointment today and we can find relief for your watery, red eyes.
